The Parent Institute
Format: Day Long Training or Series during regurlarly scheduled meetings
Options: A La Carte or Full Series
Title: Tiny Choices X-treme Outcomes for Parents: Nasser Jones will speak about the consequences of the tiny choices he made as a teenager and young adult that landed him in Juvenile Hall, Teenage Father, and on the track to destruction. He will address the impact of the positive choices he made, and how one can turn their life around. He will speak about the value taking positive action in the life of a young person, and how this can create a compelling future that will attract opportunities and success.
Nasser will share with the audience the commitment and sacrifice he and his wife have made to ensure success in the lives of their children by being stay-at-home parents. While not every family can do this, he and his wife committed that they would work towards being in a position to be involved parents in every way. He will share the challenges he and his wife faced with having two children with special needs and how to skillfully advocate on their behalf, while creating win-win partnerships with teachers and administrators. He will emphasize the importance of advocating for your own children, but how he and his wife have dedicated their lives to advocating for children of others as well.
Nasser will also share with the audience a touching story, about one of his sons with a debilitating nerve condition (video – - > http://goo.gl/Olt5j), and the challenges it places on a family. He will highlight the level of perseverance needed to advocate for one’s child to ensure he/she has what they need in an academic environment.
Highlight 1: Nasser will break through wood boards to demonstrate the power of “breaking – through” and overcoming the tough circumstances of life to create awesome students that will succeed.
Highlight 2: Nasser will speak about the internal flame that propels us towards success! He will challenge the audience to consider doing more of what is working, and changing what is not. He will the power of overcoming one’s fears through a fire-eating demonstration.
Parent Institute
Training Overview
Parents will participate in a Parent Institute focused on building their communication skills that will positively affect student and family behavior and interaction with staff in the school.
Part I: The Core Six – Developing a Balanced Approach to Life, Education, and Purpose.
Parents will discuss the NKJMP Core Six and its tenets to help students develop a balanced approach to education. Parents will examine their personal approach to life and education and determine how it fits in what they communicate to their children.
Part II: Cultural Competency & Connections
Parents will engage in an interactive workshop to establish a basic understanding of culture and what it takes to affirm their children and to interact effectively with staff in an educational environment. They will explore common concerns they share as a community and how they positively or negatively impact school climate.
Part III: Cultural Competency & Communication
Parents will engage in an interactive workshop that will place their daily experiences at the center of the session. They will learn what works and what does not work in a communication across cultural differences. Parents will engage in role play and discussion.
